This forum was for questions specific to the operation of the now-discontinued U3 apps including Firefox for U3, Thunderbird for U3 and OpenOffice for U3 published by PortableApps.com. As U3 has been completely abandoned by Sandisk with no transitional or upgrade path, we are unable to offer any support for any of these products.

Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org for U3 by PortableApps.com...well I have a u3 how install these?

usb sticks either U3 or PortableApps.com, are of the same technology and used interchangeable as one or as the other? but, no mix Apps...correct?

Replacing the U3 Platform with PAM

It has come to my attention that SanDisk ceased support of u3 launchpad and related software on or around 2010-08-18. when i found this out i started looking for one of 2 things: all the software that i wanted for my u3, or a replacement to the u3 launchpad. my searching lead me to PortableApps.com.

To make a long story short, through trial and error i was able to compleatly replace the U3Launchpad software with the latest version of This and have that run the current version of PAM.

Would any one want the instructions on how to do this all in one place?

PortableApps on U3

I know it's not the best place to ask this, but is it possible somehow to delete the original U3 software from my U3 Cruzer (16GB) and install the PortableApps framework to it's place? I mean that little CD-like partition what makes U3 start up at insert.

Is it possible somehow?

If you can't decide if you like U3 or PortableApps, Try a start menu that can open both U3 applications and PortableApps applications.

Creating U3 application Icons

I read the articles on here and they were very useful, I created my own basic XML manifest and also used "Shortcut Creator 4U3".

The only problem I can't resolve or in fact I can't work out the required syntax in the XML so I can pass parameters to the application when I launch it, for example this does not work:

I'm trying to execute the program Xming and at the same time pass the parameters to the application rather like a DOX batch shortcut:

A couple of U3 apps

I have a Sourceforge project where I have been releasing apps for U3, and I have mentioned it in a few of my posts, but I thought I'd just make a general post here. I have also created an application that will create U3 shortcuts to other portable applications. I know that there are several apps out there already that do this as well (such as SmithTech's), but mine can also "reinstall" the program (really it just moves the files) into the U3 program's directory, so the U3 Launchpad can correctly detect the program's size and uninstallation. As of yet, I only have Pidgin, GIMP, and ZSNES, but I also have several others in the works. I know these are not PA releases, but I use PAF releases as my starting point most of the time (other than ZSNES, I built that one from the ground up). So I guess two things. First off, I just wanted to say hey, I'm doing this, and second I wanted to ask a question of the devs here. I've had John get on me a couple of times for not doing things right, but I really do want to. So my question is, since my launchers are modified from the ones found here, how should I go about giving credit? Also, if anyone sees anything glaringly wrong with what I'm doing, please speak up. I realize there are a lot of "U3 Smart" apps out there that are just half-baked crap, and I want to avoid that entirely. Any comments, criticisms or suggestions?

Yahoo Voice Phone Out

Is there any portable app for U3 that covers "Yahoo Voice phone Out" ?
Tried Trillian but that does'nt work with the Phone Out account.

Does anyone know if Pidgin Portable works ?

I would like to make OOo 3 for U3 from PA's version, using the same method I described in the FF3 U3 thread. To summarize, this would involve the following:

Removing the PA branding (but finding some other way to give credit where it's due without implying that you support my efforts or are responsible if something goes wrong)

Create a U3 Package that contains the unbranded, but otherwise unmodified PA Installer

On first run, rather than running OOo, it actually runs the installer with the /DESTINATION command-line argument set to the U3 program path.

After OOo is installed, the .u3p file in the U3 app directory is replaced by one that contains only a modified manifest that points to the newly installed OOoPortable and an appstop executable

In effect, I am suggesting a "normal" install of OOoPortable, and automating the creation of a U3 shortcut along the lines of SmithTech's shortcut creator, but with the addition of an appstop routine.

Because of the this, there should be no real problems, as it is, after all, just OOoPortable with a U3 shortcut.

I know this probably won't be welcomed with open arms, but is there any reason that I absolutely cannot do this? (Such as the reason I can't do this with Firefox is because of Mozilla's license). As far as I know, OOo is LGPL right?

Problems running Mozilla Thunderbird for U3

I got my USB flash drive four months ago and I'm been working successfully with it until now that my new laptop runs with Vista. The problem now is that when I try to open Mozilla Thunderbird for U3, I get the following message: "Thunderbird for U3 cannot be started. You may wish to reinstall to fix this issue. (ERROR: The program could not be found:\thunderbird\thunderbird.exe."
I've got stored hundreds of email stored on my flash drive and I don't want to loose all that information.
Please, if there is somebody who came across with this issue and know how to fix it, I would ask him for help. Thanks in advance.

U3 launchpad does not open. Instead blank folder opens PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

My U3 Drive used to work fine, but now it doesn't at all. When I used to plug it in it would pop up a message saying it needed to disconnect from my computer before it could run properly. When I hit ok it woulb open the launchpad. Now instead it opens a blank folder from within the U3 drive. PLEASE HELP, I need to be able to use this drive. It works fine on other computers. This comp is connected to a network and I do not have administrative rights.
