Chrome has essentially reverted to a fresh install.
I opened it yesterday to find that all my extensions had been removed, session gone and this

I don't have or use passphrases

Afterwards, I updated thru the platform. The error message is gone, but data loss remains. Still asking for a passphrase. I assume all previous setting changes have been reversed as well.
Are you logged in to Google and have sync setup? If not, you're gonna have a bad time.

As you install Chrome, you'll see this message: "Please note that you MUST sign into Google Chrome with your associated Google account in order to have a fully functional browser when used portably. Unlike other browsers, some components of Google Chrome are locked to a given PC and will be lost if you move from PC to PC including extensions, extension settings and data, homepage and search settings, etc. This is by design of the Google Chrome team."
Users have noticed that Chrome is getting worse now. When used with the command line switch to set the profile location, it no longer saves history even when logged in.

I'm pretty I was. I've used that program for years. I changed nothing from the last time I used it. Never had a problem before.

I'd suggest logging out and logging back in. You could also reset the app by deleting the GoogleChromePortable\Data directory. Back it up first just to be safe. Then log in and it should restore your profile.
This will happen when you move PCs or move the location of the app.

I'm not clear if all the comments here refer to my issue. I backed up the folder after your comment. I tried deleting the Data directory. That just completes the removal of any data that still remained.
I still don't know what to do with this,

Don't see an option to delete.
I deleted it from Outdated Apps before I saw your post here and lost it. Sorry about that.

Please try deleting the History file (no extension) within GoogleChromePortable\Data\profile\Default

It just happened again several days ago. i opened Chrome to what is essentially a fresh install.
Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 19045.4894 (22H2)
Happened again after last update. Deleted history, no help.
Would I be better off to download all apps individually and use them without involving the platform?

It won't make any difference whether you use it with or without the platform. The upgrades work the same way. And your issue will remain. You must remain logged in. You'll have to relogin in sometimes.

When you say "your issue", are you inferring these occurrences are specific to my experience, and nothing can be done? Going forward, should I expect all my data to disappear every time there is an update? Will this be occurring with other apps as well?

You must stay logged into Google Chrome Portable to use it in a supported fashion. This is non-negotiable. Chrome has protections built in to prevent anything from modifying its profile, settings, homepage, cookies, etc. Chrome itself will reset your profile if anything in it changes. You have to log in to Google to sync it all. That way, when it does disappear, you can resync it from the cloud. I've stated this multiple times in this thread and don't think I can make it clearer.
If you are unwilling to stay logged in always and resync your profile, you should not use Google Chrome Portable. Period. This is the way it works by design of the developers of Chrome itself. You should use Firefox Portable instead (a properly portable web browser) or you could try a Chromium variant though many of them will have similar issues to Chrome.
This issue is specific to Google Chrome itself by design of its developers. It has nothing to do with anything we can do and nothing to do with the rest of your apps. This is expected, designed behavior of Google Chrome.

There's a long-time Chromium bug that can also result in data loss. Seems to be most often reported during updates. It can affect extensions, history, stored passwords, and/or bookmarks. Some users only lose one, some lose more than one, and some lose all of them.
The Chromium devs fixed one potential source of the issue a couple of years ago, but it is still around. Other Chromium-based browsers are affected more frequently, but there are rare reports of it against Chrome, even with an account logged-in.
I am logged in.
I just ran into another problem. First thing I did was install Bitwarden. But after that, the Bitwarden vault was already logged in, but the vault won't load
